Language Line

“Only” 由簡單的四個字母組成，但把它放在句子的不同位置就能改變句子的意思。

這個字可作形容詞 (用於形容名詞) 或副詞 (解釋甚麼動作如何、為甚麼、在哪裡發生)，甚至是當連接詞。

當副詞時，”only” 解作 「沒有其他或更多﹔唯一」，例子有 “This is for your eyes only”。它也可表示「不多於﹔僅僅﹔只有」，如 “If it were only true! I cook only on weekends”。它也有 「最近於」的意思，就像 “I saw that film only yesterday”。”Only” 也與最後的結果或決定有關，例子有 “You will only regret your harsh words to me”。

當 “only” 作為形容詞，它可解作「唯一一個或一類別的少數」，如 “This is the only clean shirt I can find”。同時，它有「作為唯一一個或一類別的少數」的含意，就如 “an only child; an only son”。”Only” 更可表達「獨特、優越」的意思，就如 “The one and only David Beckham”。

“Only” 用作連接詞之時，意思是「不過」，帶出一限制如某情況的約束，例子有 “I would have accepted your invitation, only my mother didn’t want me to go”。
